Bunk Bed Double Futon
Building your double futon bunk bed is easy to do. As long as it is constructed properly, the bed should be able to serve you for a long time.
Required Materials and Tools
Nuts and bolts
Screwdrivers
Drill with bits
Saw
Hammer
Nails
Lumber
A couple of futon sets
Step 1
Make sure the futon sets are similar. Next, measure the width, length and thickness of the lumber that will constitute the headboard. Do not forget to measure the posts.
Step 2
Make the headboards and footboards for the bunk bed. Cut the lumber to the desired dimensions. In most cases, the posts do not exceed seven feet, height wise. In terms of thickness, it has to be of considerable thickness.
Step 3
To make the double futon bunk bed, start drilling holes on the footboards and headboards. The holes have to be big enough for the bolts that are included with the frames.
Step 4
Hook up the futon frames onto the footboards and headboards. Use the screws, nuts and bolts to fasten them into place. Make sure the parts are secure. Note: if you made the posts thicker than the posts for the futon, you will need to use longer bolts. The width however, will be the same.
Step 5
Make certain the futon frames are fastened to the headboards and footboards. The frames are securely attached if they do not wiggle.
Step 6
The next step is to make a ladder. Get several pieces of lumber and make the steps for the ladder. Hook this up with the steps using the nuts and bolts. To be on the safe side, affix it to the footboard or headboard.
Step 7
Paint or stain the footboard, ladder and headboard. This will prevent any splinters from appearing. When it has dried, the bed may be used.
Tips and Warnings
The first rule is to always measure twice and cut once. If necessary, mark the points where the lumber has to be cut off. Wear safety gloves and goggles when sawing wood. Caution should also be exercised when using the drill.
You can make the process easier by buying the kits instead. These will include the materials and tools needed to put the whole bed together.
Making a double futon bunk bed is less complicated than it sounds. If you buy the kit, it should take only an hour to put the whole thing together. If you have experience, it will probably take less time.
